SPY’s Community Newsletter

(2/15/25)

Oh, What A Night!

The SPY’s 29th Annual Wild Game Dinner / Sportsman’s Night held on Saturday night, February 8th. was truly an event to behold!  The American Legion Hall in Charlotte was jam packed for this once again sold-out event.  Pete Weller heads up this extravaganza and works extremely hard to make it a legendary success!  Again, this year he instituted a number of clever and well-received innovations.

In the next few SPY’s Community Newsletters we will be providing much, much more detailed information about the event---the multitude of various winners----details on donors and helpers---etc. etc. etc., so please stay tuned.  But in this Newsletter we will do homage to the over 50 Major Donors / Sponsors that were responsible for making this event a tremendous success!

·      Deep Thought of the Week: I’ve learned that the best way to succeed is to do small things well.

·      Notable Quote: “It is useless to try to hold a person to anything he says while he’s madly in love, drunk, or running for office.”-----Shirley MacLaine

·      That’s Puny Department: Mobster #1: “That horse tip you gave us came in at twenty-to-one.”; Mobster #2: “What’s wrong with that — those are great odds.”; Mobster #2: “All the other horses came in at 12:30!”

·      Did You Know Section: Did you know about Elvis’s secret? “The King” was actually born a natural blonde.   Elvis began dying his hair black from a very early age. Because of this, only one photo of him with his natural hair color exists – and it is framed and hangs on the wall of Graceland.  Since he was a teenager, he started dying it with shoe polish as a cheap alternative to hair dye. Back in those days, cosmetics were an expensive luxury only a few could really afford. Later in his life, Elvis opted in for a signature mix of hair dyes: Miss Clairol 51D and Black Velvet / Mink Brown by Paramount. Due to this, every single photo you will see of him features super-dark black hair.  He was so obsessed with keeping his hair black that he even made Priscilla Presley dye her hair before their wedding.

Editorial Comment

Eaton County Board of Commissioners District #1 is the largest Commissioner District, geographically speaking, in Eaton County.  It consists of Sunfield, Vermontville, Chester, and most of Roxand Townships, as well as the Villages of Sunfield, Vermontville, and Mulliken.  Tim Barnes was the District #1 Commissioner, until he abruptly resigned recently, citing “personal reasons”.  His seat went vacant.  On Thursday, February 6th the remaining Board of Commissioners met in special session to appoint someone to fill the position.  They had two experienced candidates that had come forward and express and interest in filling

the vacancy.  However, the Board of Commissioners could not, or would not, reach a decision on filling the vacancy, so the seat remains vacant.  Instead, they have decided to put the vacancy on the August, 2025 Primary ballot, and then have the final decision made by voters in the November, 2025 General Election.  By going this route they estimate the cost will be around $28,000.  Meanwhile, this same

Commissioner body will be AGAIN coming to the voters in May seeking a tax increase because they are hurting for money.  (This proposal already failed in the last election).  So here we are, everyone now on the Northwest corner of the County will have no voice on the Board until after the November election.  (Taxation without representation ring a bell?)

Side Note: Commissioners manage a variety of                               responsibilities including adoption of an annual county                     budget, planning long-range capital improvement programs,           establishing county policies, enacting ordinances and                     adopting resolutions. Commissioners also serve on Eaton               County Committees such as Health and Human Services,               Information Technology and Communications, Public Safety           Committee, Public Works and Planning and Ways and                     Means Committee.

It’s Euchre Tournament Time!
