SPY’s Community Newsletter

(11/18/24)

Thanksgiving Greetings

On Thanksgiving and always, may you and your loved ones savor all that is rich in life.  May the festivities come alive with a cornucopia of hope, faith and goodwill.  Here’s wishing that your Thanksgiving is full of love, warmth, and extra special moments.

Main Street Demolition Project Has Begun

Early last week the demolition of the old Hanna’s Locker buildings and the Old Timers Bar, that had originally been slated to occur last summer, has finally started.  The retail store part of the old Hanna’s building is gone.  (See picture below).  And, as this newsletter went to press, the two-story lockers building was just about  totally down and gone.  The bar building will be next.

News From The Library

The Friends of the Library Holiday Raffle is underway at the Sunfield District Library.  From now, until December 7th, many wonderful items are on display.  The raffle is the groups major fund raiser and helps support programs that benefit the library and the community.  Donations came in the form of items, as well as, in monetary form.  Businesses, families, and individuals alike came together to donate.  There are many great items available this year, such as over twenty gift cards; a Tom Izzo autographed MSU basketball; restored antique 1880’s bench; many, many, many handcrafted items; a number of toys and gift baskets; a special Sabresmith battle ax; a number of one-of-a-kind items; not to mention a leather recliner from Mapes Furniture; and the list goes on and on.  Be sure to stop by and check it out.

Important Notice #1

The Lakewood Community Council has once again requested help with the annual Christmas Basket Project for the Lakewood School District.  Drivers that are familiar with the Sunfield area are needed on Saturday, December 14th, at 9 AM.  (In the last Community Newsletter the date that was listed was incorrect.  December 14th is the correct date.)  It will take just a couple hours of your time, at the most.  Please mark that date and time on your calendar and make plans to help spread some holiday cheer.

The Christmas Basket project helps nearly 200 families in the Lakewood area.  Volunteers are needed to deliver the baskets to the designated families in the Sunfield area.  Anyone that would like to help out, just show up on Saturday, December 16th. at the Central Methodist Church in downtown Lake Odessa.  For Further information, please contact John Fisher at 517-648-0969.  Thank you!

Important Notice #2

Please be advised that the date for the annual Wild Game Dinner and Sportsman’s Night has had to be adjusted due to a conflict.  The new date will be Saturday, February 8, 2025.  Remember, it will be held at the American Legion Hall in Charlotte in 2025.  Keep watching for details.

Important Notice #3

Nominations please!  At the SPY’s Annual Meeting of the Membership that will be coming up in January, the election of officers for 2025 will be held.  Any SPY member that is interested in serving as an officer in the organization, or would like to nominate someone you think might be interested, please contact either Craig Cappon at 517-331-4005, or Renee Strimback at 269-967-5787.  Thank you.
