Wild Game Dinner / Sportsman’s Night Is Coming Soon!
The tickets for this year’s event are going quickly. We’ve had a lot of new people sign-up already! If you are interested in going you had better get ahold of Chairman Pete Weller ASAP! REMEMBER---This year’s SPY’s annual Wild Game Dinner / Sportsman’s Night will be held on Saturday, February 8th at the American Legion Hall in Charlotte.

Looking For A Little Help Here
1. We are in need of some helpers on the night of the Wild Game Dinner / Sportsman’s Night coming up on Saturday, February 8th at the American Legion Hall in Charlotte.. The tasks we need help with are easy, but extremely important. We need chip sellers / distributers at the door; tray porters; and other various and sundry easy tasks. Please give Chairman Pete Weller a call at 517-743-1642 if you care to lend a hand at this important and popular fund-raiser. Thank you.
2. The SPY’s are looking for someone to take over the Chairmanship of our Adopt-A-Highway program. The SPY's pick-up trash along M-43 from Round Lake Road on the west side of town to Shaytown Road on the east side of town, three times a year in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Transportation program. What’s involved with being the Chairman of this activity is primarily handling the sign-up sheet and passing out bags to the volunteers the day of the event. If you would like further information or to volunteer, please call Craig Cappon at 517-331-0219.
3. The SPY’s are also looking for someone who would be interested in serving as Secretary for the organization. For further information on what this would entail, or to volunteer, please contact either Craig Cappon at 517-331-0219, or Renee Strimback at 269-967-5787.

· That’s Puny Department: For a number of years now I have had a fear of speed bumps. But, I’m slowly getting over it.
· Did You Know Section: The very first item sold on eBay (then called Auction Web) was a broken laser pointer that sold for $14---at that time, more than the cost of a new one.
· Interesting & True Department: Everyone’s heard of Paul Revere. His midnight ride on the eighteenth of April in 1775 to warn of British troops marching toward Lexington and Concord has become a part of American folklore. But another epic ride, which began the following day, has been largely forgotten.
Hours after hearing that British troops had opened fire on colonial farmers in what became known as the Battle of Lexington, the Massachusetts Provisional Congress issued a call to arms, asking neighboring colonies for help. Israel Bissell, a twenty-three-year-old dispatch rider, was sent south to spread the news of the Revolution.
Under his spurs, his horse seemed to take wing. Local legend has it that he made Worcester, a day’s ride, in just two hours! His horse dropped dead when he got there. With a new horse, Bissell was off again. Through Connecticut he raced---then to New York---and on to Philadelphia. Astonishingly, he rode 350 miles in just six days---a record time.
Paul Revere, by contrast, rode only twenty miles. But Revere’s effort to “spread the alarm to every Middlesex village and farm” were immortalized by poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Nobody wrote a poem about Israel Bissell, so he wound up one of history’s has-beens.
However, in 1995, Massachusetts poet Clay Perry finally gave Bissell a poem of his own. It begins:
Listen, my children, to my epistle;
Of the long, long ride of Israel Bissell;
Who outrode Paul by miles and times;
But didn’t rate a poet’s rhyme.
· Another Revolutionary Historic Tid-Bit: Most Americans can name a few of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence. Some stand out more than others, such as John Hancock, who is remembered for the extravagant flourish of his penmanship. Look closely, however, and you will find a woman's name on the document. While she didn't sign it, Mary Katharine Goddard did publish it. Congress approached the Baltimore postmaster to print the second copy of the Declaration in 1777. To ensure her name would go down in history, she added, “Baltimore, in Maryland: Printed by Mary Katharine Goddard" at the bottom of the document.
